Kim Kardashian will soon take on another challenging role – this time as a divorce attorney! According to reports, Kim will co-star alongside Ryan Murphy on an upcoming Hulu series based around Laura Wasser.
Wasser is widely known for her expertise in handling high-profile celebrity divorces, such as those involving Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as well as Johnny Depp, Britney Spears, and Heidi Klum – earning her the nickname the “Disso Queen” by TMZ.
Laura Wasser
Laura Wasser has quickly become one of Hollywood’s premier celebrity divorce lawyers, thanks to the clever selection of her initials as LAW by her dad Dennis Wasser, himself an esteemed entertainment attorney. Laura works at Wasser Cooperman & Mandles firm in Century City where her client list reads like an invitee list for an annual Vanity Fair Oscar party: Kim Kardashian was represented during their split from NBA player Kris Humphries; in addition, Angelina Jolie, Ryan Reynolds, Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher all sought her representation during their respective divorces from NBA player Kris Humphries; represented Kim during Kim Kardashian’s divorce proceedings while working alongside Angelina Jolie Ryan Reynolds Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher among others.
Wasser, who hails from a prominent divorce attorney background, attended University of California, Berkeley before enrolling at Loyola Law School. She is best known for negotiating complex prenups and settlement agreements. Wasser’s office reportedly features contemporary fittings like glass desks as well as fur rugs, hand grenades, and posters proclaiming a message to clients proclaiming, “The End.”
Wasser has made headlines as a celebrity divorce lawyer on gossip Web sites such as TMZ in relation to her clients’ relationships and divorce proceedings, though this has not altered her approach to practice; she tells PEOPLE that while the stakes may be higher for celebrities than non-celebrities when going through the process.
She has handled many high-profile divorce cases for celebrities, such as that of Brangelina and Brad Pitt in September 2016, Kim Kardashian/Kanye West’s split, as well as negotiating their separation agreement. Known for being both tough yet compassionate when negotiating on clients’ behalf, Ms. Lee is often called on as one of her legal teams’ top negotiators.
Water is known for her work as both an author and public speaker on divorce issues. Her book, It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way, serves as a guidebook for couples going through a separation and emphasizes positive aspects of separation. Wasser has also given numerous talks at universities and community events across the United States as well as receiving many awards for her efforts.
Known as the “Disso Queen”
Wasser has earned her title of Divorce Attorney to the Stars due to her outstanding representation of several high-profile cases. Additionally, she can often be seen accompanying celebrities to courtroom hearings or meetings and has even been given the nickname of the Disso Queen by TMZ due to her involvement in some of Hollywood’s largest divorce cases.
Wasser was first exposed to marital dissolution shortly after graduating from Loyola Law School in 1993 and filing her own divorce petition shortly afterwards. Although only 24 at the time, she found the process emotionally draining and decided never to get married again.
Wasser made her vow but later married again in 1994; unfortunately, the second marriage only lasted one year before they filed for divorce again. When her experience as a client made her better at helping clients file faster with court, Wasser discovered that charging more brought faster results for clients’ divorce proceedings.
Rolodex of clients includes Angelina Jolie, Ryan Reynolds, Dr. Dre, Maria Shriver and Jennifer Garner; along with multiple reality television credits like guest spots on Real Housewives of New York City and 2 Broke Girls.
Once word began circulating that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were entering into a divorce proceedings, Laura Wasser was called upon as one of their trusted advisors to help negotiate a settlement agreement. They have a longstanding history, having represented Kim in her initial divorce proceeding from Kris Humphries (which ended after only 72 days of marriage).
Reports state that this couple has been working towards their divorce for six months now, yet a settlement date remains undetermined. They have four children to consider when making decisions regarding division of wealth and drama related to division.
Kardashian has been seen going about her divorce proceedings without wearing her wedding ring and spending most of her time at her $14 million Wyoming ranch instead of being with her family in Los Angeles. Reportedly she has requested from husband Kanye a prenuptial agreement as well as significant spousal support payments from him.
Represents A-Listers
Laura Wasser is one of the go-to legal minds when it comes to celebrity divorces, and currently represents Kim Kardashian as she and Kanye West begin settlement talks for their divorce settlement. But despite representing so many high-profile celebrities, Laura Wasser maintains that she doesn’t view herself solely as “Divorce Lawyer to the Stars.”
Wasser, who has been practicing law for more than 30 years, notes a change in the way couples marrying and divorcing have changed over time. She points out that most marriages in America now last eight to 18 months before ending in divorce or many couples opting to part ways after only several years together – as such, the need for divorce lawyers has grown.
Wasser is known for her A-list client list and ruthlessly defends them on behalf of her clients; her clients often refer to her as the “disso queen.” Additionally, Wasser has been described as both “divorce warrior” and Hollywood’s complete divorce solution provider.
At one point in her career, she represented Angelina Jolie (twice), Johnny Depp, Stevie Wonder, Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus and Kelly Clarkson – among many other clients including Ryan Reynolds, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Garner Maria Shriver and Heidi Klum among many more!
Wasser has never felt restricted by her gender in an otherwise predominantly male field like law, allowing her to build an impressive career and even pen an autobiographical book about her experiences as a divorce attorney.
Wasser’s methods have led many media outlets to dub her the “Disso Queen,” yet she remains proud that she has helped so many celebrities navigate their difficult separations. In an interview with Bloomberg, Wasser discussed how she often manages to keep her clients’ divorce proceedings out of the spotlight by encouraging negotiations before filing official documents and filing multiple cases simultaneously in order to reduce media attention on any one particular case. Her methods have earned her this moniker while Wasser herself remains proud that so many celebrities have turned to her during such difficult separations.
Represents Kim Kardashian
After six years of marriage and media-fueled scandal, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian have officially parted ways. Now facing intricate questions regarding their fortune and custody of four children, the power couple are facing complex decisions about dividing it among themselves and how best to divide and custody share it between themselves. Even with their vast wealth, a divorce settlement remains unreachable for these wealthy couple. They have not come to an agreement regarding assets and it remains unknown whether their dispute will be resolved through legal means or mediation. The rapper recently selected an attorney from an esteemed law firm specializing in high-profile cases to represent him during his divorce proceeding. Robert Stephan Cohen of Cohen Clair Lans Greifer Thorpe & Rottenstreich LLP in New York represents Melinda Gates in her billion-dollar divorce case against Bill Gates. Additionally, his client list includes Chris Rock, Rupert Murdoch and Athina Onassis.
After months of legal battles, Kim Kardashian was finally declared legally single in March this year; however, the divorce proceedings are far from finished. On Friday morning, a judge denied Kardashian’s request to postpone any trials regarding any outstanding issues; additionally he ordered her to file her “declarations of disclosures” by September 30th listing assets and income sources.
Celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser is publicly criticizing Kanye “Ye” West for his public attacks against one of her clients, Skims founder Jason Levine. Wasser filed divorce papers for Levine back in February 2021, and is known for representing numerous celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Ryan Reynolds and Britney Spears among many others.
Wasser, in an interview with Bustle, made clear there was no reason for Ye to launch such an aggressive and negative public attack against Kim and Pete Davidson. She noted how Ye’s conduct was inappropriate citing claims such as not wanting his daughter’s photos posted to TikTok or making music videos attacking the couple in general, including one with Kim as its subject matter and its subsequent deletion from YouTube.
Now it appears that Kardashian will put her acting skills to the test in a TV show based on her divorce proceedings. American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy will direct this new series written by Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken of Brothers & Sisters for Hulu that stars Kim as head of an all-female law firm.
